Editor's Note: Since the field of photonics is broad, deep and far-reaching, Corporate Connecticut features a series about the industry, including collaborations in science, education and corporate industry leaders. The first segment profile is Dr. Anthony DeMaria, chief scientist at Coherent. The second is a profile about academics with an abundance of professional curiosity, which led them to teach photonics - and spread the word about the industry, keeping pace with cutting-edge technology and scientific developments due to innovations.
Photonics = Light Science
Education Collaborations Spawn Opportunity
“Photons (from Greek, meaning light), in many atomic models in physics, are particles that transmit light. In other words, light is carried over space by photons.” - Wikipedia
Photonics is the science of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy for use in a broad range of applications, including medicine, telecommunications, science, manufacturing and defense.
NOTE: The science of light plus innovation equals breakthroughs across nearly every aspect of our lives. Academia is a crucial part of our country’s staying competitive with global markets, called on to shape people who “speak science” and can think across disciplines.
A three-pronged approach means education sparks the curiosity, teaches the basic blocks to step up each learner to a pathway; scientists discover new ways to apply knowledge; then business turns the key to harness workable ideas, thereby spawning a host of supportive services that include attorneys, venture capitalists, marketing, communications, and so forth, to birth businesses.
So, who’s doing this? Their work connects across the region and has rippled out across the globe. Meet some of the people on the frontline to keep the USA competitive.
